Master these before the quiz, dino friend!
๐Ÿฆด Basics
What is a Fraction?
A fraction = Numerator รท Denominator
The numerator is on top (how many pieces you have).
The denominator is on bottom (total equal pieces).
๐Ÿฆ•
Rex the Dino has 1 pizza cut into 4 equal slices. He ate 1 slice โ†’ he ate 1/4 of the pizza! The bottom always shows how many total equal pieces exist.
โญ Must Memorize

Numerator / Denominator โ†’ TOP / BOTTOM โ†’ N comes before D in alphabet โ†’ Numerator is on top!

๐ŸŒฟ LCD
Finding the LCD (Least Common Denominator)
To add or subtract fractions with different denominators,
find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) first.
LCD = the smallest number both denominators divide into evenly.
โญ Must Memorize โ€” LCD Method

Step 1: List multiples of each denominator.
Step 2: Find the smallest number on BOTH lists.
Step 3: Convert each fraction to use the LCD.

๐Ÿ“ Worked Example: LCD of 6 and 8
Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30...
Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32...
โœ… LCD = 24
โž• Addition
Adding Fractions
Same denominator: Add numerators, keep denominator.
a/c + b/c = (a+b)/c

Different denominators: Find LCD first, convert, then add.
โญ Must Memorize

Same bottom? Just add the top!
Different bottom? LCD โ†’ convert โ†’ add tops โ†’ simplify!

๐Ÿ“ Example 1 (same denominator): 2/5 + 1/5
Same denominator (5) โ†’ add tops: 2 + 1 = 3
โœ… Answer: 3/5
๐Ÿ“ Example 2 (different): 1/3 + 1/4
LCD of 3 and 4 = 12
1/3 = 4/12    1/4 = 3/12
4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12
โœ… Answer: 7/12
โž– Subtraction
Subtracting Fractions
Same denominator: Subtract numerators, keep denominator.
Different denominators: Find LCD first, then subtract.
โญ Must Memorize

Subtraction works just like addition โ€” same rules!
Find LCD โ†’ convert โ†’ SUBTRACT tops โ†’ simplify!

๐Ÿ“ Example 1: 5/8 โˆ’ 3/8
Same denominator โ†’ 5 โˆ’ 3 = 2
2/8 โ†’ simplify รท 2 = 1/4
โœ… Answer: 1/4
๐Ÿ“ Example 2: 3/4 โˆ’ 1/6
LCD of 4 and 6 = 12
3/4 = 9/12    1/6 = 2/12
9/12 โˆ’ 2/12 = 7/12
โœ… Answer: 7/12
โœ–๏ธ Multiplication
Multiplying Fractions
Multiply straight across!
Numerator ร— Numerator, Denominator ร— Denominator
a/b ร— c/d = (aร—c) / (bร—d)
Then simplify your answer.
โญ Must Memorize

Multiplication = EASY! No LCD needed!
Top ร— Top, Bottom ร— Bottom โ†’ then simplify!

๐Ÿ“ Example: 2/3 ร— 3/4
Top: 2 ร— 3 = 6    Bottom: 3 ร— 4 = 12
6/12 โ†’ simplify รท 6 = 1/2
โœ… Answer: 1/2
๐Ÿฆ•
Rex's tip: Cross-cancel BEFORE multiplying to keep numbers small! Example: 2/3 ร— 3/4 โ†’ cancel the 3s โ†’ 2/1 ร— 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2. Same answer, easier math!
โž— Division
Dividing Fractions
Keep โ†’ Change โ†’ Flip (KCF)
Keep the first fraction, Change รท to ร—, Flip the second fraction
a/b รท c/d = a/b ร— d/c
โญ Must Memorize โ€” KCF Rule

๐Ÿฆ• Keep the first fraction
๐Ÿ”„ Change รท to ร—
๐Ÿ”ƒ Flip the second fraction (reciprocal)
Then multiply straight across!

๐Ÿ“ Example 1: 3/4 รท 1/2
Keep 3/4, Change รท to ร—, Flip 1/2 โ†’ 2/1
3/4 ร— 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2
โœ… Answer: 3/2 (or 1ยฝ)
๐Ÿ“ Example 2: 2/3 รท 4/9
Keep 2/3, Change รท to ร—, Flip 4/9 โ†’ 9/4
2/3 ร— 9/4 = 18/12 = 3/2
โœ… Answer: 3/2 (or 1ยฝ)
โœจ Simplify
Simplifying Fractions (Reducing)
Divide both the numerator AND denominator by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF).
A fraction is fully simplified when GCF = 1.
๐Ÿ“ Example: Simplify 6/8
GCF of 6 and 8 = 2
6รท2 = 3    8รท2 = 4
โœ… 6/8 = 3/4
โญ Always simplify your final answer!

Check: Can both top and bottom be divided by the same number? If yes, keep simplifying!
